5 / May 2014

Amsterdam – Join us on the 5th of May, at 12:30 at Tolhuistuin for a screening of the “Displaced” videos and a discussion about how participatory media projects can empower communities of women.

About the project:

‘Displaced’ Youth Exchange. VOW Media brought together a group of young migrant women living in Spain, Romania, Greece and the Netherlands. Over a ten-day workshop they were trained to use video and photography in order to voice their own lives and control their own images of representation. We provided a safe and creative space for participants to celebrate the multiple dimensions of their identity and share this with the world using multimedia.

In addition to exploring their identities, participants met and built solidarity with other young migrant women, together exploring issues of xenophobia and racism and the importance of combating them.

All the videos shown are shot, directed and edited by the participants!

About the event

European Alternatives is a transnational membership organisation promoting democracy, equality and culture beyond the nation state. One of the ongoing projects is the Citizens Pact. The past years concrete proposals were collected to advocate a fairer, more democratic and less discriminatory Europe. This resulted in the Citizens Manifesto. In April 2014, six camper vans will leave six cities and engage on a transnational trip, passing through a total of 18 European countries. They will visit places of local struggles and amplify their voices at the European level. The North Western caravan will arrive in Amsterdam Sunday the 4th of May. On the last day of the journey, European Alternatives: democracy, equality, culture, beyond the state will take place in Amsterdam. We celebrate liberty on 5th of May! Unfortunately not all citizens in Europe enjoy the same freedom. The event of European Alternatives calls attention to initiatives and individuals who are fighting for freedom under pressure, such as privacy, right to work, migration rights. The program will consist in screenings and discussions and an open dialogue between attendees and invited (candidate) MP’s.
